Friday June 12th MJ BISHOP & MIKE STEPHENS show OPENER BOBBY PENNOCK!

MJ Bishop is an acoustic folk Americana solo artist out of Seattle who has performed steadily since 1998 in and around Seattle, and has also taken her music to Oregon, California, Idaho, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana and Florida.

Her long-awaited third album, Pull Of The Moon, sees her rolling up her sleeves and plunging into the grittiness that is Americana, through the sweet, familiar melodies of folk. The added trim around the edges reveals her deep roots in country, jazz, rock and pop. On these 12 tracks, MJ’s unwavering smoky vocals start from the dirt in the crawl space, climb the stairs to the kitchen, the bedrooms, the attic, and finally blast through the roof. She takes you on a journey starting with the evocative opener “Up North” (about her small home town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula), weaving a story around the life of a guitar, life’s pushes and pulls, love, loss, heartache, freedom from the nine-to-five job, and the appeal of the open road. You will be conflicted by the lyrics as they first lure you with the promise of good times before abruptly dropping you into a chasm of loneliness and heartache.

Friday June 12 MIKE STEPHENS and MJ BISHOP and Bobby Pennock

MIKE STEPHENS

Most know him from his successful Podcast Show "The Open Mike Cafe"
We know him as a phenomenal songwriter!
As good as any and Better then Most certainly!
He not only writes songs that are relevant to our lives but he reaches to areas that are sometimes ignored!
A Great Performer as well he connects with his audience ...Always a great time
when Mike is in the House!

TO hear MIKE go to:
www.myspace.com/openmikecafe

tickets $12
Starting off tonights show is BOBBY PENNOCK
Raised on The Beatles and 60s AM and 70s FM radio, Bobby has crafted a fine collection of original, creative/progressive melodic pop songs for his latest release "10,000 Stories."
"Pensive, thoughtful, brooding, dark, mysterious, are but some of the adjectives that could be applied to the music of Bobby Pennock, and perhaps to the man himself. Bobby's smooth tenor and accomplished guitar playing put Bobby in a class by himself, and perfectly suit his folk-rock compositions. You will hear new things, and discover new shades of meaning each time you listen to these masterfully crafted song-stories." --From the Counter Clockwise Music website--You can find Detroit-based Bobby out and about performing solo, as part of The Pennock Stephens Project (w/ acclaimed singer/songwriter Michael Stephens), or with the electric Bobby Pennock Band.

Saturday June 13th Mike and Jim Anger!

THE ANGER BROTHERS!

Jim is a reading-writing educator on the Menominee Indian Reservation in north central Wisconsin, while Mike is a pediatrician-type doctor in the Chicago area, so getting together isn't all that easy. But they manage.

Mike and Jim, each, have recorded several other albums, and have added musically to each other's CDs. When they 'play out" together these days, they are The Anger Brothers.

They have performed at Wisconsin and Chicago area coffeehouses, special group events, and at the Shawano, WI Old Time Music and Crafts Festival.

Both men are members of the Green Apple Folk Music Society (Green Bay-Appleton, WI), and have shared the Green Apple stage on several occasions.

As a children's doctor, Mike has been involved with One Step At A Time, a camp for children stricken with cancer. Jim and Mike have shared music with those kids several times. All of the proceeds from Dr. Mike's album sales go to help support One Step, and the proceeds from Jim's railroading songs album, "The Train's A-Comin'," also go to the camp.

Besides "Then & Now & Again" and "The Train's A-Comin,''Jim's other albums include, "Headin' Out," with some railroading songs and other songs with a nostalgic feel, and also a childrens' album, "Rainbow in the Sky," with songs for children of all ages.

(Jim is a member of The Children's Music Network). One song on the "Rainbow" album was largely written by Jim's 4th grade students. It's about doing good things for others and then often having good things come "Right Back To You." The kids recorded the song with Jim, so, appropriately, the proceeds from "Rainbow in the Sky" go to the Menominee Reservation Toys For Tots program. Mike's other CDs, which tend to be romantic in nature, include "From the Heart," "Long Bridge: A Wisconsin Journey," and "Sunrises, Sunsets, and Seasons."

DID we mention they happen to be GREAT FRIENDS of OURS!

The ensemble also pulls influences from jazz, swing, traditional Latin, Parisian waltzes, and other vintage-jazz sources. Stephen Colarelli

Stephen Colarelli has been playing music since he was about six years old, when he began playing the accordion. He took up the guitar when he was 12 and violin and piano when he was in college. He has played in bands off and on for most of his life, and has been writing music since he was 15. For his day job, Steve is a professor of psychology.

Michael Lee

Singer-Songwriter, Michael Lee, resides near the Jordan River of Antrim County, Michigan. His November 2008 win at the Mid North Michigan Blues Challenge in Traverse City, secured him a spot in the solo-duo class competition at February's International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee where he performed originals like, "Singin' the Blues" & Out of Town". Also, with a love for Folk and Roots styles of music, Michael infuses his songs with the qualities he, himself, has enjoyed over the years. Since a teen, in the acoustic group "Cody", Michael has had many opportunities to share his love for music with other artists. He's been part of the duo "Synergy", the "Roscoe Jordan Band", & the Classic Rock band "Claude Fraug". His ease with the audience and knowledge and experience both on and off stage, makes him a natural fit when it comes to filling spot as an MC or Stage Co-ordinator. His latest CD "My Own Man" displays his strengths in Blues, Folk, Roots, R & R, & Christian Contemporary.

Friday July 10th All da Way from Georgia SMOKESTACK

Smokestack

a Phenomenal

One man Blues Band!

SmokeStack, born March 23, 1978, originally hails from the great corn state of Iowa, but soon after ended up a Navy brat, and called Florida home. By age seven he ended up in Georgia, and stayed there for the most part, save a couple of extended trips to Iowa and eight months in North Carolina.
He dropped out of High School at age 16, getting GED, and diving into the construction/carpentry field. Now a journeyman carpenter, and enjoying the more so remodel/refinishing side of hammerswingin'. SmokeStack recently has been playing music again(for-real gigs), and alot of buskin'. In hopes of doing so more often, but in his own way of things. Incorporating the hard, all day energy needed for construction, and putting it into the great art of song writing and performing(Which some say SmokeStack was born to do). He plans on finding or making his niche'.

Basically a self-made man. Taking care of what is needed to get by, and barely doing so sometimes. He has managed to create and learn some hard-earned knowledge rarely even cared about today. Always having to fix his own cars and trucks through-out life. Farming what little land in hand and doing work for rent has kept everything modest and humbling. Prepared for change, but remembering the great things of the past has always been the way he has led his life.
SmokeStack and the Foothill Fury or just Smokey himself have shared the bill with some mighty fine acts. Including Colonel Bruce Hampton, The Derek Trucks Band, Jeff Coffin, Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon, Rev. Jeff Mosier, Grease Factor, Jeff Sipe, MudCat, Johnny Neel, Derek Jones, King Johnson, Donna Hopkins Band, Big City Sunrise, Barry Richman, Ralph Roddenberry, Beverly Guitar Watkins, Frankie's Blues Mission, Lola Gulley, Sammy Blue, Donnie McCormick of Eric Quincy Tate, and most recently the Rib Tips.

Some memorable moments are:.....Any given moment at the Northside Tavern. The rockin' out of his somewhat home town of Gainesville, Georgia every Mule Camp Market weekend for the past five years, Sage Fest in Georgia, Moon Mountain Zambifest, and many benefits for the ones he loves. Including Beverly Guitar Watkins at Darwin's, Cora Mae Bryant's Sweet Petunia day, and Mr. Frank Edwards Chicken Raid at the Northside Tavern.

BLUEGRASS with PATCHWORK Sat July 11th

BLUEGRASS NIGHT Saturday July 11th

with

PATCHWORK

Patchwork Band is a west-Michigan based bluegrass band. You will find us appearing on concert and festival stages across Michigan and Indiana.
Our original songs have the Patchwork Band fingerprint of the northern style of bluegrass that the band has become famous for. This style is woven through the band's original arrangements, the old standards, as well as the contemporary bluegrass songs we play.
We derive our unique sound from the driving beat of John's 1941 vintage Kay bass, the rhythm stylings of Ruth's guitar, the fine picking of Bryan's banjo, and Terry's mandolin and old time fiddle and harmonica playing. Top it off with our tight harmonies and you have one great musical experience.
There is something for everyone at a Patchwork Band concert. John, Ruth, Terry and Bryan hope to see you all very soon.

Phil was born in 1947, and one thing he knows is how to play the hammered dulcimer, which he never heard of growing up in Monroe, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio; and Ashtabula, Ohio.
He probably never heard of the dulcimer while participating actively in the antiwar, civil rights, and women’s liberation movements in Cleveland, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago in the sixties and seventies. But the folk music all around him in those days entered his spirit and never left. After Phil and his wife, writer Barbara Gregorich, settled in the Chicago area in the early seventies, they joined the Old Town School of Folk Music, and Phil began to itch to play an instrument. He really wanted to play the drums, but the set he had in mind didn't fit into a nine hundred square foot apartment.

Although Phil heard the hammered dulcimer for the first time on John McCutcheon recordings in the late seventies, he didn’t immediately make the connection between hammering strings and hammering drum heads. Finally, at a John McCutcheon concert at the Old Town School in 1994, the light dawned. Inspired anew as John played the dulcimer, Phil thought: “I can do that.” After just one lesson with teacher Dona Benkert, Phil was hooked. Promises, Promises, published in the summer 1995 issue of Dulcimer Players News, tells the story of Phil’s early (and continuing) dedication to the dulcimer.
1996 Phil left his work in the graphic arts industry to devote his time to the dulcimer.Today Phil is one of few musicians not only to play the hammered dulcimer, but also to sing while accompanying himself on the instrument. His playing skills are captured on his CDs, Swinging on a Gate: Traditional American and Celtic Music and Cold Frosty Morning: Christmas and Winter Holiday Music, both with guitarist Tom Conway. He performs frequently in the greater Chicago area and teaches individual students and at workshops and music festivals. One of his favorite musical activities is getting together with friends for weekly old-time jams. Not content to weave only melodies, Phil has taken up basket weaving and chair caning. He is a member of the National Basketry Organization, as well as the American Federation of Musicians Chicago Local 10-208, the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance, the Recording Academy, the Old Town School Of Folk Music.

FRI AUG 21 Dublin Native BRENDAN NOLAN

"Nolan has been blessed with a rich Irish Voice and an Irish way with words. In his singing and his musical arrangements he helps his listeners to feel the pain, the joy, the humour, the triumph, the sadness, the longing, as deeply as did the old songs of the tradition."
-- Ron Duffy, Canadian Folk Music Bulletin, Calgary, Alberta.

Brendan Nolan was born and reared just to the north of the city of Dublin. When he was growing up in Ireland in the sixties and seventies there was a resurgence of interest in Irish music. Spearheading this musical rebirth were groups like The Dubliners and Planxty. Around the same time the singer-songwriter boom in America had taken off. Both of these genres would ultimately influence his own music.

WANNA BOOK? PERFORMERS INFORMATION!!

The White Crow Conservatory Submissions on Sonicbids

HEY.. Heres the Scoop! I know.. its a long one......

ALL CONCERT NIGHTS and Open Mics RUN from 7 to 9pm Sept thru the end of May
8 to 10pm June thru the end of Aug.
TWO SETS with a break in between
Get here an hour before for Sound.

OPEN MIC
YOUR TURN This evening is Hosted and Run
by MIKE STEPHENS of the OPEN MIC CAFE!
It is recorded
and rebroadcast...
No advance notice needed.
Signup upon
Arrival!

Please be ready for your turn when your name comes up.. that means, Please know what piece you are going to perform and Have your instrument tuned before you take the stage.
There is no way for us to let you know how many songs you will get to do in a given night it depends upon how many musicians show up for the evening.

The Cost at the door is
$5 for everyone!

HOW TO GET BOOKED!

We prefer to book through SONIC BIDS.. its a cleaner format and easy for me to keep track of. If you are a performer and you dont have an account yet with them.. think about it. We guarantee through Sonic bids that your submission will be dealt with either a yeah or a neah within one month and a half..BUT we really do them right way on that site..mostly within two weeks of submission!

If you send by myspace it sometimes gets thrown out with the days influx of Myspace messages..events..bulletins and such so you take the Chance of not getting heard.
If you send by SNAIL MAIL.. well its a big pile here and its growing larger but I will eventually get to you!

We use Sonic Bids as performers ourselves to book many of our own gigs and usually its cheaper then a hard mailing and the Venues tend to sort through the sonic bid submissions before they dig through the Snail MAIL!

If you absolutely dont want to do Sonic bids then send us your myspace with sound clips on them. "Also a note, if you are booking as a solo or duo please consider loading a couple of tunes on your space that is representative of what you will be doing in person. Very often I do not book in Perfromers because they claim to be acoustic solos but all of their recorded pieces are anything but that.

WHO we book!

WE are an acoustic- Listening room, non alcoholic and non smoking. That is not to say that we dont want you plugged in.. we do. We just limit the use of Electric Guitars, electric Basses, keyboards, drum kits, and techno additions to almost Never.

There is a wonderful sound system here so there is no need to pack one...If you are attached to your own mic, bring it. We have had some performers want to perform totally unplugged and we are happy to accomodate that as well.

We book in peformers of all Genres, mostly roots based music. Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Gospel, Old timey, Folk, Singer songwriters, all world music and instrumentalists. We also book in some Jazz and Classical. We bring in bands from all over the world and we also offer evenings for regional and Local bands as well!
You will be considered for a spot at the Crow only by the music you send for us to listen to.. we cannot listen to a 17 piece band recording or a Recording of you performing with a Rock band and Assume that you would be a good fit here Acoustically.

"Please be aware that we do not book in very many Contemporary Singer Songwriters for their own evenings UNLESS they are Roots based or Unless they have a tried and True DRAW.
We encourage all songwriters to be a part of one of our Songwriter Showcases. which is the first Saturday of each month!"

SONGWRITER Showcase

This event is scheduled the First Saturday of Every Month.

It is a shared stage performance of Three Performers...in the Round Format.
It is hosted by Mike Stephens of the OPEN MIKE CAFE, recorded and posted on the Podcast Monthly.
The door is $12 and it is split four ways. You have an opportunity here to not only sell CDs but create a following in this area and through the podcast you are also being given an opportunity be heard by a Larger Audience.
Please be aware that this event is set up in the Round.. which means you are all on Stage at the Same time taking turns and being interviewed along the way.
Since you are sharing the time with other performers try to keep your selections within a reasonable length of time..
If everyone is thoughtful about not burning up too much time on their turn then all THREE performers should get 3 to 4 songs per set!

Same time format as any other concert night 7 to 9 from Sept through May and 8 to 10 from June thru the end of August.
Two sets.
Always best to get here an hour ahead for sound.

Booking a Date at the CROW so Whats in it for YOU?

Our Performers usually receive 70% of the Door after we take off 10% for the PRO's or otherwise known as the Music Mafia ."Ascap and BMI. You receive all of your CD sales plus we will consign them year round for you once you perform here. We have a wonderfully appreciative audience and a fantastic room to perform in. We have a great House system so its easy in and out for you. The Crow is smoke and Alcohol free and very often we order in food from some of our favorite restaraunts if you will pass out without nourishment. Overnight arrangements can sometimes be made if you dont mind staying with us.. We havent killed anyone yet so you are relatively safe. Actually our home is only 5 blocks from the Crow and we usually have extra room for an Occasional Wayfaring Stranger. Arrangements though have to be set up ahead of time as we are Road musicians ourselves and are sometimes not here when you are! Otherwise we may be able to set you up in the Home of one of our Volunteers!

PLEASE be courteous..if you make arrangements to stay with someone dont at the last minute change your mind. Our Volunteers spend time of course getting ready for your stay and if they get jilted often its hard to convince them to offer their hospitality again.

We record most live performances and for a small fee you can get a copy. We get an exceptional quality recording so much so that some perfomers have used these for Live CDs.

WHAT to do when YOU are Booked!

Well... if you have a date with us then you know we are thrilled also! We want you to draw the largest crowd available that evening and this is how you can help ensure that.

Send us at least 4 CDs.. One to be used as a sample in the shop. Two to leave on the shelf for consignment and One extra as so often I run into Radio folks and PR opportunities.. Other musicians will vouch that I carry many performers CDs with us when we are on the road.. I sometimes sell them for you at our own gigs But many times I leave them in the hands of Radio folks across the Midwest and The East Coast. Im happy to help promote you as much as you will let me.
Understand that if we Love your stuff we will do this year round and not just in conjunction with your play date here at the Crow.
"IF you do not want me to Promo out any of your music to Media... PLEASE let me know!

CONTRACTS? Well to tell you the TRUTH I neither have the time or inclination to mess with CONTRACTs and lets face it.. they are only worth something if you plan on Sueing someone for breaking it!
On our end...We have NEVER not carried through on a date booked on our word and have only been stood up a Handful of times by folks that I can assure will not get another Date here.
If you get a date from me and I tell you Im putting you on the Calendar.. GUESS what.. You're Booked!
NOW with that in mind we expect you to be here. We send out our Promo a minimum of two months ahead of time.. If we are running posters it all costs money and nothing is more disrespectful then to not come through on a gig after we have put money out to Promo it!
The White Crow is one of the Finest listening Venues in the Midwest,
if you get a date here make the MOST OF IT..

YOU can mail a copy of your CD or MP3s
to area radio stations and podcast shows.
Attach info on who you are and when you will be performing at the CROW
and please mention which track you would like played. It takes alot of the work out of it for
the radio folks and they will more readily pop it in the lineup!
soupygato@gmail.com : Dan Harris.. soupy gato show
mike@theopenmikecafe.com Mike Stephens Open Mike Cafe
howardsharper@delta.edu Howard Sharper Delta college radio

You can contact our local newspapers.. if you send them something and we send them something they tend to pay more attention!

We want you
to help promote your own show here by:

Sending US your promo to be posted on the Crow Sites.. JPGS , MP3s and a SHORT blurb on your music.. NO childhood bios and keep your list of Prizes & who you've stood on stage with to a minimum. We Promise we will redirect folks to your website for all the gory details!
My email flyers have to be clean and to the point .. most folks are only interested in what your music sounds like.. so MP3s are your best selling tool here.
SNAIL mail dont forget we will need Posters and CDs!

Announcing your date here at your gigs that lead up to your Crow Date!

Posting it on your websites

Send out eflyers to your fan base, or postcards to your mailing list.

Send us flyers and posters and each time you come back to the Crow be certain to gather emails of those interested in knowing where you are!

Also a good way to help bring crowds in is....

AFTER YOUR gig and you are back out on the Road.. talk about your experience here and others will want to come and check it out as well. We as musicians should try and cultivate a desire in our audience to come out and see the next guy coming in! When we do that we help to create a community that CRAVES great live music and your next night will be fuller here as well. This also will help venues such as The CROW stay in business long enough for you to come back for another gig!

If you have had a night with us previously and your crowd was light PLEASE consider the list above and make an effort to cover these points if you want a returning Date!

SOUND SYSTEM

WE do not allow others to set our sound unless you have been personally invited to do such. You and your band will be in the capable hands of Zig Zeitler who has been doing sound for the last thirty years. If he is not available we will have someone here that we Trust. If you are not comfortable with that then stop here. The reason being is that our reputation as a venue also rides on the experience of our audience and too many times this last season we have had folks want to do their own sound or even worse have brought their own "sound engineers" who frankly did a less then poor job in setting up.

We know our equipment certainly better then someone coming in for the first time and our goal is to make the Performer feel as though they have never sounded better!
Performers pay and CD sales!

PAY and Perks

Another goal we have is to make the Performer feel Appreciated and Respected and we instill that attitude in our audience on a regular basis here! Our crowd is apprecciative and will purchase CDS if they enjoy the evenings music so be sure to come stocked. Your CD sales are all yours and we usually have someone here who is Happy to help take care sales for you if you wish. Also once you perform here we will be happy to Consign your CDs year round in the Shop at a 60/40 split.

We have very rarley given guarantees. Your cut is 70% of the door. Our ticketed evenings range from $8 to $15 dollars. We have occasionally asked up to $22 and we have donation evenings as well that run at a Minimum $5 at the door!
YOU receive ONE "significant other" Pass per musician.

We are sorry but If you bring along your wife or boyfriend then you cant get your cousing Vinny in Free too!
Kids 12 and under are free..
13 to 18 half off
senior discount is half off.

You can help yourself to whatever you would like to drink throughout the evening and many nights we have baked treats as well.

WHEN to get here

We expect performers to be here no later the 6pm for a sound check and be off the stage by 6:45. Our first set traditionally starts 10 minutes late at 7:10pm. There is one break so that you can meet the folks relax and sell CDs and such. Back up for one more set that runs till 9 but many nights our audience has to be shot at to get them to leave so dont be surprised if they keep sitting there hoping for more! We stay later quite often.

IN CLOSE

We want to do everything we can to make your evening here one of the best performing experiences you can have. If you have any questions or concerns or special needs ie.. Early arrival, Place needed for overnight stay and so on...

Please contact me and we will try our best to address whatever we need to...
There is a wonderful non Denominational Church service on Sunday mornings here..

We have had many Saturday night performers stay over and share their music the next morning at Service. If you feel you would like to be a part of the following morning..
LET US KNOW and we will keep you overnight and even feed you the next morning!

THANKYOU for reading this entire POST!

A Blip in the Road

As many of you know, at the end of March 06, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It was to say at least a shock to Zig and I with all that we had going with our own bookings and the newly opened Conservatory.
I underwent three surgeries and lost both breasts, however as I say, I don't need them to drive!
Just after I started chemo in June, some of my greatest friends both known and unknown came together to host a benefit for me at the Crow. They raised Funds to go towards my medical bills and such.
What a God send.
Mr Roger Gomez of Sessions in Sheilds donated a human hair wig for me. Having never met me before I found it overwhelming that he would do such a thing from the heart and I have vowed our children's hair will be cut by him until they are bald as well! We have had friends old and new rally around us both at home and at the Crow. Delivering food and cards, taking shifts at the Crow while we are at doctors appointments.
It has been a wonderful gift of friendship that our children have been exposed to and it has helped them feel safe during a scary time.
My chemo will be done on September 11th. Not a lucky date I know, but I'll take it!
I want to thank everyone for all you've done. All of the prayers you have been so thoughtful to whisper for us. I know just saying thankyou is not enough but please know there is just too much in my heart to express right now.
Zig and I are looking forward to the end of treatment and booking STONECROSS again! Possibly in November 06.
Until then, we'll see you at the Crow!
Stay well, and God bless all of you and keep you well!
Siusan and Zig.
