SUMMERS HOT SHOW - IRELANDS ANDY IRVINE Tuesday August 5th

We are Thrilled to be able to offer this Evening at the CROW!
Dont MISS IT!
Andy Irvine has been hailed as "a tradition in himself." Musician, singer and songwriter, Andy has maintained both personal integrity and highly individual performing skills throughout his 40-year career. From Sweeney's Men in the mid sixties to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, to THE Irish super group, Patrick Street, in the 80s, Andy has been a world music pioneer and icon for traditional music and musicians.

Irvine occupies a unique place in the musical world, plying his trade as archetypal troubadour, with a solo show and traveling lifestyle that reflects his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. Few others can equal his repertoire, Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes, and a compelling canon of his own material that defies description.

In his two years with Sweeney's Men, the group ignited an interest in traditional Irish music that survives to this day. Their successful singles, "Old Maid in the Garret" and "The Waxie's Dargle" landed at the very top of the Irish Hit Parade.

Andy left the band in 1968, and made his first trip 'way out yonder', traveling by 'the sunburnt thumb' in Bulgaria, Romania and Yugoslavia, earning his living as a street musician and absorbing the musical traditions of the Balkans. Returning to Ireland, Irvine united with Christy Moore, Donal Lunny and Liam O'Flynn to form Planxty, fanning the flames of Irish Traditional Music well into the next generation.

Planxty took a break in 1976 and Irvine worked and recorded with Paul Brady, making the classic album “Andy Irvine & Paul Brady”. After a brief time with De Dannan, he rejoined the reunited Planxty from 1979 until its breakup in 1983. . Andy’s his first solo album, “Rainy Sundays ... Windy Dreams”, followed, as well as “Parallel Lines” a duo album with the great Scots troubadour, Dick Gaughan.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Andy formed Mosaic, a pan-European band that included Donal Lunny and Hungarian singer Marta Sebestyen. After one blissful summer traveling through Europe with this band, Andy returned to solo and duo work. This work soon grew into Patrick Street, featuring Kevin Burke (Bothy Band), Jackie Daly (De Danaan) and guitar maestro Arty McGlynn.

Patrick Street, originally billed as Legends of Irish Music – one of the few times such hoopla was accurate, recorded three albums from 1987 to 1990. Andy then recorded his second solo album, “Rude Awakening”, and created the hugely influential ”East Wind”, an album of Balkan music, produced by Bill Whelan and featuring Davy Spillane on Uilleann Pipes. Patrick Street regrouped in 1993 with Kevin, Jackie, Andy, and Ged Foley. To date Patrick Street has released eight recordings, all on the Green Linnet label.

Early in 2002, Andy drafted some long-time musical friends and formed his “dream band” for a one-off tour of Australia. Calling themselves Mozaik, reminiscent of the earlier cross-genre group, Andy was joined by Donal Lunny, Dutch guitarist Rens van der Zalm, Hungarian bagpiper Nikola Parov and American fiddler Bruce Molsky. They have since released two albums, "Live from the Powerhouse" (2003) and "Changing Trains" (2007) and have toured Australia, Europe and America.

Planxty reunited in early 2004 for 10 reunion concerts in Ireland, which all sold out the same day the tickets went on sale. The concerts were recorded for CD and DVD releases, "Planxty Live, 2004."

Andy continues to tour with Patrick Street, which released their eleventh album in November 2007, called "On the Fly." It marks a transition for the band: the first with new member John Carty, and the last with retiring member Jackie Daly.

In January 2008, Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow featured a special reunion of Andy Irvine and Paul Brady for their "Classic Album" showcase concert, honoring their duo album released in 1976.

Andy continues to tour extensively, both solo, with Patrick Street and Mozaik, throughout Europe, Australia and America with occasional visits to more distant places like Brazil and Japan.

Although an integral part of the finest Irish bands of our time, Andy Irvine continues along the road he set for himself so long ago - a vibrant career as a solo artist in the old style, a teller of stories and maker of music.

"Woody would have been Proud"

Denver Post

Andy Irvine's solo stage show is a musical travelogue through time and space. His right hand dexterity on bouzouki was nothing short of amazing.

Frets Magazine

Andy is one of the most creative and talented people it has ever been my privilege to work with. Great company, superb singer, genius of a musician, truly original songwriter and an inspiration to all of us - what more could anyone ask?<br/>
Dick Gaughan

Andy Irvine is Ireland’s Woody Guthrie, with a philosopher’s ear and a prophet’s passionate voice. He is also a stunning singer and instrumentalist who weaves melody and texture, harmony and rhythm, into a rich tapestry of present and past.

sandy eggos STEVE POLTZ SUNDAY JUNE 1st

HEY!
Who's STEVE POLTZ?
He trick-or-treated at Liberaces house, planned a two-day stay in Amsterdam that ended a month later with him escaping the city under the cover of darkness, and was Bob Hopes favorite altar boy. Alone, these anecdotes go well with a fistful of peanuts at a cocktail party. But on top of all this, he also co-wrote the longest-running song on the Billboard Top 100 (Jewels You Were Meant for Me), had a debut solo album that earned three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, and was awarded the title of San Diegos Most Influential Artist of the Decade at the San Diego Music Awards. What you end up with is one of the most engaging, twisted, and prolific songwriters of our time Steve Poltz. Poltz has cultivated his reminiscences into a heartbreakingly gorgeous collection of songs for his new album, Traveling.

FRIDAY JUNE 6 IAN THOMAS! 8PM

"Songster"
Isle Of Man United States Minor Outlying Islands

For the last ten years, songster Ian Thomas has been on the road - sometimes in style, sometimes hitchhiking or others in an old beat down car.

He began playing on the streets between San Francisco and New Orleans, forming brief collaborations with other street performers before moving on, a hobo traveling the land with an acoustic guitar slung over his back.

There is an old belief that one has to travel to discover oneself. Learn and listen from the world, and then reconcile those influences with your own voice. It is an adage that the likes of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Bob Dylan all subscribed to. You can hear all of that in the voice of Ian Thomas, a man whose music traverses the echoes of 20th-century Americana, yet brings the songs together with a clarity that is both remarkable and refreshing.

Thomas plays the guitar, harmonica, and kazoo - each with a distinctiveness that drives his flexible performances. As a live performer, Thomas is clearly picking up the torch of American folk music. He shakes one dusty-booted foot to keep the time, wears a hat that covers his eyes and sings in a high, sure voice. Young Dylan references are impossible to escape, but Thomas' own sense of commitment gives the old medium fresh legs.

His lyrics are layered and painterly, the words of an old soul, replete with images of liquor bottles, hollowed-out faces and lonely nights. "I know I'm alone when I lay by your side," he sings.

TICKETS $12 8PM

“I’ve seen Ian Thomas live several times and I don’t say it lightly when I proclaim that one of those performances was the most powerful and awe inspiring sets I have ever seen in my life.” - Urban Folk Issue 6”

Folk singer Ian Thomas, this year's Press Best Of winner for nostalgia-free revival act, is on the cusp of greatness…”- New York Press”

SPECIAL ED & THE SHORT BUS Friday June 20th

Special Ed and the Shortbus is a bubbling fountain of virtuosic insanity. Seeing them play is like watching a high-speed train about to jump the tracks. Unstoppable energy matched with technical mastery, outlandish humor and fully engaging entertainment, the Shortbus is a sight to behold.
Jug band, Bluegrass, Old-Timey, String Band, Vaudevillian, Jazz, call it what you will, it's just American music (except when it's Eastern European). The band employs banjos, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, a trap set, a doghouse bass, many kazoos, and a whole host of other toys to create their irresistible sound, a truly Special blend.
Special Ed and the Shortbus have been playing music together since the Spring of 2002. Based in Richmond, VA, they have traveled far and wide through VA, MD, NC, and WV; as well as up through NY and New England. Over time, the music has moved in many directions as their individual characters have come together, creating a many-limbed frenetic bluegrass beast. They have gained a reputation both near and far for high energy and sometimes bizarre live acts.
"A friend of mine asked me, "Are you sure you want Special Ed to play? Have you heard them?" Yes, I have. Multiple times. Special Ed and the Shortbus is a stringband that may seem a little hard to swallow for some. Much like the Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders before them, their shows are veritable litmus tests for a crowd's sense of humor. If you've ever answered yes to Frank Zappa's question "Does humor belong in music?" then The Shortbus is for you. They're straight-up nuts when they pick and sing, and if you can get past the lovely freakishness of their stage act, you'll find some real talent backing up the zaniness." - Haymaker Productions (www.haymaker.com)

"Special Ed and the Shortbus - what a great and politically incorrect name for a band. And Ed and cohorts are special indeed. This group of acoustic musicians from Richmond play a type of music that has been described as acoustic mayhem - a good thing, in this case. The group is a stylistic mixed bag, incorporating elements of vaudeville, jug-band music, bluegrass, old-time string-band music - and, naturally, various Eastern European musical traditions. It's careening, high- energy entertainment that is off the rails - but expertly performed. "
Relish - Triangle Area, NC

"Slightly disturbing dada-esque Va.-based string band that’s one part Beefheart freakout and two parts trad jug-band. Too bad that off-putting name will likely hold them back (pun intended)." - Connect Savannah, Savannah, GA

Special Ed and the Shortbus is a band that has fun, makes you have fun and sends giant fun bubbles wafting throughout the universe.
Bluegrass meets ragtime. Lots of stomp and swagger. Ridiculously funny lyrics.
-- The Garage, Winston Salem, NC

“Special Ed & the Shortbus specializes in unearthing and inventing traditional music and twisting it into new concoctions. Full of virtuosity and reverent irreverence, they are a sight to behold.” - Relix Magazine
TICKETS $12

Jennifer Bagwell adds 5-string banjo, cello, and sweet harmonies. And Tex Ragsdale slaps a bass line while lending back-up vocals. From Nova Scotia Fresia & the Offspring July 18th

A home schooling experience became a musical partnership when singer songwriter Eric Fresia decided two years ago to include two of his children as band members while travelling through Mexico. With a small marimba for his daughter Charlotte (then 9)and a djembe for his son Sam (then 11), the new trio quickly charmed thier audiences with Eric's repertoire of mixed languages and genres. From Latin to Blues, Roots to Reggae, they attracted people of all ages, Mexicans and travellers alike.
Upon their return to Canada, Eric tested his new band on the Atlantic Jazz Festival stage for the release of his third Cd, and the trio has been busy ever since, including a gig playing for the Honorable Romeo Dallaire during the Pugwash Peace Conference.
Winter 2007 was spent writing and recording and by June the band had released their first self-titled album. The summer saw them grace some of Atlantic Canada's most renowned stages including the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, the Multicultural Festival, The Waterfront Jubilee and the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival.
With his band back in school, Eric kept himself busy booking a North American Tour that will take his family on their longest journey yet, a four month tour around North America with stops in the states, some of which include louisianna, New Mexico, Colorado and California. As part of their travels this trio is sure to pick up new fans and new rhythms.
In the final two months of the tour, Fresia and the Offsprings will be performing in Canada, in British Columbia, and they will be appearing at The Winnipeg Folk Festival, in July.
BUT... its Best if you see them @ THE CROW!

Jud Caswell lives where the two Maines meet: where ex-hippies play cribbage with fishermen and a kind of rural poetry is salted with Yankee gumption. He grew up on a little farm in Morrill, Maine, picking carrots and milking goats; listening to records by Cat Stevens and the Beatles, reading Mark Twain and Kahlil Gibran. A multi-instrumentalist from an early age, he wandered through jazz bands, orchestras and medieval ensembles before finding his home on the acoustic guitar.
Heralded by Sing Out! magazine as "one of the leading singer-songwriters on the current scene," Jud has won eight nationally recognized songwriting contests.
